In India, during September-October, grape canes are pruned for fruiting. This pruning is called ‘forward pruning’ or winter pruning. Vines, which have attained the age of one year, can be subjected to this pruning. The level of forward pruning depends upon the region, variety and vine vigour of vines. After October, the important growth stages for fruit pruning are the Bud break stage, Vegetative growth, flowering, berry set, berry elongation and maturity.
The use of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers with chelated micronutrients in early stages ensures even bud break and canopy development. The developed canopy protects the berries from sunburning. Foliar fertilisation is the fastest and most effective method to supplement and enrich plant nutrition and correct nutritional deficiencies.
